Hidden Lives presents compelling true stories of three New York City immigrant families—one Jewish, one German, and one Italian—set in three tenement neighborhoods—the Lower East Side, the South Bronx, and Hell’s Kitchen—during the first decades of the twentieth century. In each of these narratives, the central character is a woman without power and without voice. Their stories, compassionately told, bring to life statistics that record the city’s stunning population growth between 1880 and 1910. The three women are Rogers’s grandmothers, their stories kept secret for almost a century. She has chosen to break the silence that surrounded their lives and pay tribute to women too long hidden from view. Hidden Lives is also the story of her search for her families’ past. Rogers writes, “Minnie, Margaretha, and Catherine could not share recipes or handiwork or wisdom with me. I never knew them. But I have learned to love them and cherish their heritage. I am them—Jewish and Catholic, German and Italian, tougher than I thought, more fragile, too.”

Like others who have commented on My Three Grandmothers, I couldn't put it down! Carole Garibaldi Rogers' quest enthralled me, even as it frustrated because of the several dead ends she reached. What perseverance it took for her to ask her father the hard questions, to spend the hours in hard-to-access archives, to fearlessly write of the search in her own heart as she tells us of the difference in her own life, now that she knows her true--and very rich--heritage.

I visited New York's Tenement Museum for the first time last winter and know this book will find a welcome place on its bookstore's shelves. It should also be on the reading table of every man and woman who has family secrets of their own. Which, I expect, means all of us! I know My Three Grandmothers has renewed my commitment to researching the mysteries in my own family history. Thank you, Carole Rogers, for this book, honestly and gracefully written, fascinating in both its historical and personal details, and absolutely riveting as we follow your path to unravel the mysteries.

Hidden Lives My Three Grandmothers Carole Garibaldi Rogers 9780985849559 Books Reviews

The book poignantly confirms the beauty of the truth. Virtually forever, the author was denied "the real story" behind the lives of her biological and adoptive grandmothers, but with perseverance and love, she has unearthed a remarkable family history. Rogers writes well--clearly and fluidly--and her understated style evokes emotional reactions, as we begin to see what she might have done with more facts and less deceit while the principal characters were still within reach. Yet she has reached out to other family members and pieced together a fascinating story.
One of the more informative and moving novels that I have read in awhile....."Hidden Lives, My Three Grandmothers." Carole Garibaldi Rogers of Morristown, NJ tells her journey in discovering her 'surprising roots,' giving great insight into the lives of the Jewish, Italian and Irish immigrants in NYC at the turn of the 20th century. It is easy to relate to her passion and desire to unravel 'the unknown'
Great story. Very human and touching with a historical perspective well researched.
Secrets were kept in those days uncovering them can be painful as well as liberating. This story opens up new paths for the author .I enjoyed it very much.
This remarkable story is a triumph of research and historical imagination. I am the hidden cousin who's been found by the brilliant and beautiful author, my gift of a cousin, Carole Rogers. The story of how she unlocked all the hidden secrets of her families' lives is a triple adventure. If you are interested in learning how to search your origins, learn from a master. Carole wrote the book!
I couldn't put Hidden Lives down. Beautifully written, thoroughly researched, a heart-warming story of family, love, and life in its everyday simplicity and overall complexity. You'll become part of this family, celebrating their strength and their journeys. The author's quest to uncover the lives of her grandmothers, earns her the opportunity to acknowledge them and discover their gifts to her own.
This book touched not only me but a number of my friends as well. I think that we all recognized our own families on some level.

There was the fascination of the search for information. Sometimes being amazed at how much Carole was able to find out and sometimes disappointed that no more information was available.

I applaud the author who not only did all the research but also handled her own feelings and was thoughtful about the feelings of her family members as well. She is a very brave woman. I don't think that many of us would have continued the search when we knew that it would change our lives and that the knowledge that replaced what we thought we knew might not make us happy and would definitely destroy an important part of our upbringing and belief in our background. I have yet to meet a woman who has read this book who has not thought about her own childhood and family.

The real life search for information was fascinating and knowledge gained about a personal history made this book well worth reading. We are lucky to have an author who used her considerable skills as both an author and researcher to find our about her family and share the results with us.

Hidden Lives My Three Grandmothers is a wonderful book on so many levels. It's a deeply personal memoir, yet there are so many universal themes to which we can all relate. It's about family secrets that turn your life upside down when revealed. It's about the need to know who we are and where we come from and how our heritage shapes our identity. And it's about the fascinating way that the author researches and pieces together the facts about her family.

The author allows us to travel along with her as she uncovers her family history, and where the facts are sparse, she fills in the story with well-researched accounts of the various periods and locales. I absolutely loved the book and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in family history, family stories, and family secrets. I agree with some of the other reviewers.... This would make a great book club book.
