Letter to a Hostage is a book by the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Saint-Exupéry initially wrote this piece as a preface for his best friend, Léon Werth's novel Trente-trois jours (Thirty Three Days). Werth had been forced to take refuge in the Jura region of France during the autumn of 1940 because of his Jewish origins. His book, however, could not be published, and so the author significantly revised his preface, removing any direct references to his friend and making him anonymous within the text and a symbol for France as the hostage of the occupying forces. This version was published independently in June 1943. The work is comprised of six short chapters which reflect upon recent aspects of the author's life (travelling to Portugal, impressions of the Sahara, living in the Usa. . .), and combines references to his friendship with Werth and to his love for his country.

Until I started reading these other less-known writings of Exupery, I had no idea who this wonderful, courageous aviator was. He fought valiantly to keep France from becoming Socialist at the hands of Charles De Gaulle, and it probably cost him his life. This is another great example of his amazing gift with the written word. I wish there was more. Each and everyone who reads his work can't but come away awed at his brilliant understanding of the blessings of freedom and the nature of agency.Product details

The book arrived within the stated time span (which was not particularly fast), but it was in perfect condition. It's a great read -- it's possibly not Saint-Exupery's writing at his most delicate, but it certainly manages to convey several of his main themes about friendship clearly, with a gorgeous turn of phrase, as always.

Lovely little book full of poetry and wisdom. I found it thanks to the Brain Pickings on-line newsletter (a fantastic resource for any thinking person). Here Saint-Exupery turns his sensitive eye and heart on an endangered world the outcome for which he as yet couldn't know. His observations of people and place are keen and poignant.
